Video Duration "A League of Their Own" is a 1992 American sports comedy-drama film directed by Penny Marshall. The movie is based on the real-life All-American Girls Professional Baseball League (AAGPBL), which was founded during World War II when many Major League Baseball players were drafted into the military. The film begins in 1988 when an older Dottie Hinson (Geena Davis) attends the opening of a women's baseball exhibit at the Baseball Hall of Fame. While there, she is approached by a reporter who asks her about her time playing in the AAGPBL. This prompts a flashback to 1943, when Dottie and her younger sister Kit (Lori Petty) are recruited to join the league. The sisters join the Rockford Peaches, a team coached by Jimmy Dugan (Tom Hanks), a former major league player whose career was cut short by alcoholism. Dottie is an exceptional player and becomes the team's catcher, while Kit struggles to find her place on the team. The Peaches face various challenges throughout the season, including low attendance at their games and opposition from men who believe that women should not be playing baseball. However, they continue to play and improve, and eventually make it to the league championship against the Racine Belles. The championship game is intense, with the Peaches and Belles trading leads throughout the game. In the ninth inning, with the Peaches down by one run, Kit scores the tying run but injures her leg sliding into home plate. With Kit unable to continue, Dottie takes her place at bat and hits a pop fly. However, she intentionally drops the ball, allowing her teammate to score the winning run. After the game, Dottie decides to retire from baseball and return home to her husband Bob (Bill Pullman), who is serving in the military. Kit stays in the league and becomes a star player.
